Jason was born in 1998 and complications at birth led to his brain being starved of oxygen. This meant that he developed cerebral palsy, a condition that affects every part of Jason’s life.
Jason’s Mum, Lorna explains;
“Jason cannot do much physically for himself which makes tasks like getting undressed and picking up items impossible.”
Through a chance meeting Jason met a girl who had a Dogs for the Disabled assistance dog. Lorna immediately saw the potential that an assistance dog could bring to Jason and decided to apply. In March 2010 Zeke, a Golden Retriever, was partnered with Jason.
Jason instantly bonded with Zeke and Lorna says there have been huge benefits:
“Jason used to be anxious especially when in busy places. Zeke has helped reduce this. Jason loves playing sport Zeke helps Jason by fetching his kit, helps him get changed and accompanies Jason to the sessions. Jason also now volunteers for Dogs for the Disabled, taking part in Buckingham’s annual parade and assisting with tin shakes. .”
Lorna continues: “The fact that busy places are no longer a problem demonstrates just how much of a calming influence Zeke has had on Jason. The bond they have is truly amazing.”
Lorna sums up life with Zeke: “It has been wonderful for all the family. Jason’s development in such a short time has been amazing and I thank Dogs for the Disabled for Zeke, he’s had a great positive impact.”
