Hot Dogs and Cool Canines!

The Northern Centre of the charity Dogs for the Disabled is asking people in the Wakefield and surrounding area to join them in celebrating their second birthday at a special event to be held on Saturday 3rd July.

Hot Dogs for Cool Canines will take place at the charity’s Training Centre in the grounds of beautiful National Trust property Nostell Priory in Wakefield, from 11am to 2pm. Since the centre opened, 21 children and adults with disabilities from across the region have benefitted from being partnered with assistance dogs trained by the charity. Every dog is matched to meet the specific needs of their partner, and help them to live more independently.

Rowan Martin, Fundraiser for the charity’s Northern centre, is co-ordinating the event on behalf of the charity. She said: “We want this to be a real celebration of our assistance dogs and what we have achieve in the two years at the centre in Nostell. It’s a great event for the whole family to enjoy. Visitors can grab a hot dog then discover why are our own dogs are such cool canines.

Current dogs in training, Nova, Bella and Hilton will be staging demos of their work at regular intervals, and there will be the chance to quiz our dog trainers on how and why assistance dogs are trained.

Also adding to the mix will be refreshments, games, tombola, raffle and a dog show for some of our working assistance dogs. Rowan said “In the two years that Dogs for the Disabled has been operating from Wakefield we have had a fantastic level of support from local people. As the charity receives no government funding, this has been instrumental in enabling us to establish ourselves. This event will be a chance to celebrate our many achievements and to show newcomers what we can do. We’d like to invite the public to drop in, sample our barbecue and be welcomed into a world of very cool canines.”

The event is free of charge and parking is available. The site is for assistance dogs only, so regrettably the charity is asking pet owners to leave their dogs at home on this occasion.
